Success Stories

Overview

High powered mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets have become increasingly common and in many cases are supplementing or replacing PCs as a favored means of browsing the Internet. Users are therefore being exposed to the same undesirable content prevalent on other platforms as well as newly created threats, specific to mobile devices.

Commtouch’s GlobalView URL Filtering (URLF) for mobile responds to the growing need for URL filtering functionality on mobile devices to provide applications such as Web security, parental control and enterprise compliance.  GlobalView URLF is a next generation URLF solution that effectively leverages Commtouch’s cloud-based GlobalView Network to provide the broadest coverage and most accurate categorization available.

By taking full advantage of the resources available in the cloud, GlobalView URLF is able to accurately index hundreds of millions of sites into 64 categories including highly granular categorizations of dynamic Web 2.0 environments.

The GlobalView URLF SDK is a good fit for the limited resources of mobile devices, providing a local URLF Engine and cache that occupy a very small footprint.  The intelligent local URLF Engine builds differentiated, relevant local databases within every mobile device, allowing maximum coverage and including “long tail” URLs.

Commtouch together with its global network of Security Alliance partners provides timely, detailed URL security information to protect users from real-time threats such as malware, phishing, and spam sites among others. Commtouch’s security data is further enhanced by intelligence-sharing between Commtouch’s Messaging Security, Web Security and Command Antivirus services.

How it works

GlobalView URL Filtering categorizes user URL requests in the following manner:

  • The GlobalView URLF engine is integrated into the mobile device or application.
  • The user of the device browses a site, generating an HTTP request.
  • The mobile device or application queries the GlobalView URLF engine for the URL categorization.  The engine first checks its local cache for a matching URL; typically more than 99% of queries are locally resolved by the cache.
  • The engine queries the Commtouch GlobalView Network for URLs that are not in the local cache.
  • The mobile device or application blocks, allows or strips content according to the categorization it receives from the GlobalView URLF engine.

Applications

Once integration is completed, the mobile application or device can offer:

  • Secure web browsing: End-users are protected from phishing sites or sites that download viruses and malicious content.
  • Regulatory compliance: GlobalView URLF enables third-party applications to comply with international standards, limit liabilities, and offer secure and safe web browsing.
  • Parental control: Sites that feature pornography, gambling, violence, hate etc. can be blocked by category to protect young surfers from inadvertently finding.

URLF applications can be deployed by various manufacturers and developers on a range of platforms:

  • Smartphone, tablet and eBook makers can include these applications in their devices.
  • Internet Security software providers can create applications based on the Commtouch SDK or expand the functionality of their security suites.
  • Application developers can create stand-alone software focusing on a particular aspect of URLF.
  • Mobile device management software can include enhanced security or enterprise compliance controls.
  • Cellular operators can deploy URLF related services for their users.
