Dear Valued Partners and Friends,
One of the most exciting parts of protecting the Internet threatscape is that the bad guys are always changing the rules. This past quarter, we saw the emergence of new tricks designed to fool standard messaging and Web security. Email-borne viruses -- just a minor nuisance since most were blocked with generic AV signatures -- suddenly overpowered traditional AV engines with their new tactics. Likewise, image spam — which had been relegated to the Internet history books since most anti-spam engines could block it decently — resurfaced with new ways to sneak past many anti-spam engines. And on the Web security front, new types of HTML redirects emerged that foiled some secure browsing engines.
Language- and content-dependent methods no longer meet today's security challenges. Luckily, Commtouch provides proactive messaging and Web security technologies that block threats with our unique cloud-based techniques, to keep you and your customers protected no matter what new tricks spammers, malware writers, phishers and fraudsters come up with.
Regards,

Rebecca Steinberg Herson

Solution Spotlight: Commtouch Engine Failover Mechanism
The Commtouch detection engine communicates with the Commtouch Data Center to classify messages or to check IP reputations or URL categorizations. With five detection centers worldwide, Commtouch incorporates a built-in mechanism (ctengine) to auto-discover and define an available detection center for optimal and continuous results. In the background, ctengine maintains a list of all detection centers by their DNS string (i.e. its server address), and always attempts to use the highest one, resolving the server address for IP addresses of the each detection center based on the GLB (global load balancer).
When ctengine switches to work with a detection center which is not the first on its list, it will continue to check in the background for the availability of the preferred center. When the center becomes active again, the ctengine automatically reestablishes communication with it.
