Newsletter | Q1 2011
Dear Valued Partner or Friend,

As we start a new year we'd like to take the opportunity to introduce our new CEO. Ido Hadari took over from Commtouch co-founder Gideon Mantel, who retired on January 1. Ido has been with Commtouch for over three years, most recently in the role of COO.

In the six months since Commtouch acquired Command Anti-virus, we're seeing increased interest in our "Triple Play" Internet security suite - messaging security, Web security and antivirus. This “three-in-one” approach enables our solutions to protect against multiple attack vectors, while simplifying life for our vendor and service provider customers. The cross-enhancement of the three product lines is evident, too, in our Quarterly Threat Report, which now includes even more malware and blended threat data.

Also in this newsletter are some new documents, such as AV Myths and Facts, that analyzes differences among AV testing methodologies, and a case study about how a leading hosting provider, Hostway, solved its outbound spam problem.

Finally, we have several events coming up in February and March. Commtouch will be meeting with partners and new prospects at RSA in San Francisco, in Hannover or at Europa-Park in Germany. Please let us know if you'd like to meet at one of these events.

Regards,
Rebecca Steinberg Herson

Last quarter we introduced our new Command Antivirus solution, which Commtouch acquired from Authentium in September. This quarter we provide a few highlights on what makes Commtouch Command so unique and how it can benefit our partners.

Leading Detection

Not only is Commtouch Command used by major industry heavyweights, such as Google, Microsoft and McAfee, but it also demonstrates its leadership in the most respected industry tests:

Command places 4th out of 26
with 99.5% detection

In November 2010, Command Antivirus placed 4th out of 26 antivirus products tested by the well known AV-Test. You can see the results below.

Modular Design for faster protection and faster deployment

When Command's creators first designed the solution, they knew that threats would continue to evolve, get more sophisticated, and all at an ever increasing pace. So they employed a modular design so that it could adapt to new threats very quickly. This differs from other AV engines, which use a monolithic approach - basically one large piece of code.

Command is comprised of a number of modules, each designed to address different types of threats (see diagram below). As new threats emerge, new modules can be quickly developed and plugged in.

A modular antivirus engine provides a number of benefits:

1.   Faster protection from evolving threats.
The modular design provides increased flexibility - new Module types can be added quickly to combat new threats without having to change existing modules.

2.   Faster and easier deployment for partners who use the engine.
Quality assurance (QA) testing of the AV engine may be completed far quicker after the addition of new modules, or after updating existing modules, as the other modules are left untouched.

The unique modular design of Command Antivirus offers a number of other benefits. Click here to learn more about Modular vs. Monolithic AV engines.

When using their own homegrown tools was not solving their problem with outbound spam, Hostway turned to Commtouch.

Company Hostway
Type of company: Hosting Provider
Customers: 600,000
Outbound messages: 1 million per day

Problem: Spammers sending spam from compromised accounts, resulting in Hostway's IPs being blacklisted.

Read this case study and learn how Hostway was able to significantly reduce blacklisting, save money, improve customer satisfaction and increase efficiency with outbound spam protection.

What Hostway has to say:

“Commtouch’s Outbound Spam Protection helped Hostway identify many compromised/ phished accounts as well as “trickle spam” that we otherwise couldn’t detect because it was below our rate limits. Blocking outbound spam in real-time has prevented us from being blacklisted by any major ISPs.”

John Martis
Executive Vice President, Hostway
