Newsletter | January 2012
Dear Valued Partner or Friend,

After the December lull, welcome to one of the busiest quarters, kicking off 2012 with important events around the world. Commtouch representatives will be looking to meet with you and your colleagues at six (!) industry events over the next two months: Parallels, RSA, MAAWG, World Hosting Days, CeBIT, and Mobile World Congress. Most of us have become so adept at staying in touch via email, social networks, and the occasional phone call, that it can be refreshing to have a chance to speak with customers and partners face to face. So if you plan to be at one of these events, please be sure to be in touch so we can arrange to meet you.

In this issue of Commtouch In Touch, we cover a roundup of Facebook attacks throughout the year, our quarterly trend report, and a new case study with our partner Ipswitch. Over the coming few weeks, Commtouch will be making some new product announcements and sharing the results of our Hacked Web Site survey, so stay tuned.

Regards,
Rebecca Steinberg Herson

Ups and downs of Spam, Malware & Facebook Threats

2011 Malware Email Levels

2011 proved to be an interesting year for Internet threats. Throughout the year we saw major swings in a number of different Internet threats, such as:

 •  Spam started the year high and then dropped to its lowest levels in years after the Rustock botnet takedown, which took place in March 2011
 •  Malware spam was low in the first half of the year, rose to record highs in August and September, and then faded away again
 •  Facebook threats continued to increase throughout the year

You can find a more detailed analysis of the Rustock botnet takedown and the different Malware and spam swings in the April, July and October 2011 Internet Threat Reports.

In the January 2012 Internet Threats Trend Report we provide a detailed analysis of Facebook threats. Our analysis covers how social engineering was used to get them started, how they continue to propagate and we also describe what their ultimate objectives were.

In addition to the Facebook analysis, the January 2012 Internet Threats Trend Report also includes an analysis of spam, malware and Web threats from Q4 2011.

 •  Gmail.com remains the most spoofed domains while two Facebook domains join the top 15.
 •  Pharmacy spam is most widely distributed and increasing.
 •  Daily turnover of zombies down dramatically.

Facebook Becomes a Key Target for Cybercriminals in 2011

2011 was the year cybercriminals "liked" social media as an attack vector, with Facebook especially popular. The growth, popularity and inherent trust between friends on Facebook has made it an ideal platform for those seeking profit and the spreading of malicious content.

Throughout Q4 Commtouch monitored and blogged on a variety of Facebook attacks and trends. In addition to the analysis provided in the January 2012 Internet Threats Trend Report there were a number of other reports and blogs that we released:

 •  Commtouch presented a research paper on malicious Facebook attacks at the Virus Bulletin Conference in Barcelona, Spain.

 •  We created an Infographic highlighting the spread and objectives of Facebook attacks.

 •  We posted a number of blogs describing specific Facebook attacks, such as this interesting one on “likejacking”.

Commtouch Mail Sort

In this month's product highlight we feature Commtouch's automatic Mail Sort feature. Mail Sort enables service providers and vendors to offer their end-customers the ability to easily identify their personal mail as higher priority than their newsletters and other “bulk-mailed” material.

Mail sorting services have become more common in recent years, such as Google's 'Priority Inbox’ and Microsoft Hotmail’s ’Sweep'. The problem with these services is that they require end users to "train" the service to know which mails are personal mails and which are mass mailings.

Commtouch's Mail Sort removes the need for end users to train the service to identify different types of emails. The feature takes advantage of Commtouch's GlobalView Cloud to automatically distinguish between individual emails and mass message blasts.

“While opt-in newsletters are valuable, they overstuff email boxes and make it more time consuming to find higher priority email. Because Commtouch’s solution is automated and requires no manual training, it provides a differentiator for vendors and service providers when compared to recently launched services that require manual training.”

Simplified Operations and reduced TCO

Company:
Type of company: Ipswitch Messaging Division provides communication and collaboration tools for companies in need of a turnkey collaboration system in a single server.
Customers: SMBs, small to medium hosting providers, education and government
Problem: Severe issues with its existing antispam engine were causing Ipswitch to lose customers. Ipswitch was also looking to improve the antivirus protection it offered its customers.

Learn how Ipswitch was able to implement Commtouch's Antispam protection and increase spam detection from 65% to over 99% while lowering false positives. The implementation of Commtouch's Email AV containing cloud-based pattern detection, combined with multi-layer file scanning, also enabled it to safeguard users from the first moments of a new outbreak and throughout the lifetime of a malware attack.

“Our relationship with Commtouch has proven to be a long running success. Our customers enjoy the very best possible protection while we benefit from the reduced costs and overhead of working with a single trusted partner for multiple solutions. The highly available and hands-off operation of Commtouch solution also frees us to focus on other essential aspects of our products and business.”

John “Tripp” Allen
President Ipswitch Messaging Division
