Commtouch Releases New Version of GlobalView URL Filtering to Support Changes in Internet Standards

Sunnyvale, Calif., December 21, 2009 – Commtouch® (NASDAQ: CTCH) today announced the availability of a new version of its GlobalView™ URL Filtering solution which provides highly accurate, secure protection against Web threats while enabling safe, compliant browsing.

New Features: Support for Broad Changes in Web Domain Format

The new version of Commtouch GlobalView URL Filtering is positioned for existing and emerging Internet standards including:

  • Support for Internationalized Domain Names (IDN): Recent efforts in the Internet community and by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) have created a process by which registrants can obtain domain names in character sets other than ASCII (e.g., Chinese or Russian).
  • Support for new generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) options: Other changes from ICANN include the option to apply for a new gTLD. Instead of being restricted to .com and related gTLDs, domain name registrants will have the opportunity to use more gTLDs, in both ASCII and non-ASCII scripts.

The new version of Commtouch’s GlobalView URL Filtering solution is designed to meet these new and growing challenges of parsing multiple languages and characters. Web filtering solutions that have not adapted to these changes will be unable to properly recognize and catalogue Web pages using these new techniques. While this is a change that will be more prevalent as the Web continues to evolve, there are already instances of domain registrants around the world implementing these standards.

“Over the last few months, Commtouch Data Centers have already recognized and successfully analyzed Web pages using these multi-language techniques. In line with our commitment to developing future-proof technology, we identified them and modified our technologies accordingly,” said Asaf Greiner, vice president of products at Commtouch. “Malware writers, phishers and other cybercriminals will try to leverage these changes, and technologies that cannot recognize non-Latin characters in domain names will be unable to properly categorize the threats, thereby leaving their customers vulnerable.”

Data Cloud Technology Protects Against Evolving Web Threats

Commtouch Data Cloud technology processes billions of transactions each day from diversified global data sources and leverages its “cloud” to overcome the size and performance limitations of other types of URL filtering technology. Because of the massive database in the cloud, lightweight local clients can offer a tailored solution for individual machines by receiving and storing only the data users need when they need it.

Availability

Commtouch GlobalView URL Filtering is currently available for usage by security vendors and service providers as a software development kit. It can be easily integrated into their products to protect end users and increase revenue from advanced security offerings.
